On Sep 22, 2026 the President of the United States told the UN General Assembly that artificial intelligence would “hereinafter” be called “Super Intelligence.” A week later an executive order put the new name to work across the executive branch. This page records where the term came from, who has followed it, who has not, and how this site writes it.

In brief

A new label, the same legal definition

What changed

Executive Order 14434, Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence (signed Sep 29, 2026; Federal Register Oct 02, 2026, doc. 2026-20321), tells executive agencies to write “Super Intelligence” and “SI” where they wrote “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI,” in correspondence, communications, websites, reports and other non-statutory documents, “to the maximum extent permitted by law.” [1][2][24]

What did not

The terms carry the statutory definition of artificial intelligence in 15 U.S.C. 9401(3). Statutes, regulations, contracts, grants and documents already issued are not rewritten. A proposed federal definition is due from the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology within 60 days, around Nov 28, 2026. [1][25][26]

Uses “SI”

The federal executive branch, by order. The State Department told staff “We will be using ‘SI’ in all remarks, positions and press elements moving forward.” [9] NIST has said it is updating its communications. [30]

Keeps “AI”, so far

No major AI company has renamed a product; Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta and NVIDIA would not say whether they will. [10] SpaceXAI has applied to trademark “SPACEXSI” and its X account is reported renamed; its legal name is unchanged. [40][43] No other government, and no major news stylebook, has been found adopting the term. California’s governor signed an order keeping “AI” for state agencies. [12][13]

Why it is contested. “Superintelligence” already names a hypothetical system that exceeds human ability in nearly every field, which no one claims exists. “SI” already names the International System of Units. [11][12]
This site. Protocol STAMP keeps writing “AI.” It quotes ‘Super Intelligence’ (SI) when it names or quotes a US instrument that uses it. Why.

Two meanings, one word

Why the term is contested

The research meaning

In books, lab charters and bills, “superintelligence” (or ASI, artificial superintelligence) means a system that exceeds human cognition in nearly all fields. Google DeepMind’s levels-of-AGI ranking puts it at the top, “not yet achieved.” [11][12]

The federal meaning

Under EO 14434, “Super Intelligence” means whatever 15 U.S.C. 9401(3) calls artificial intelligence: today’s systems, including ordinary ones. [1]

The clash. A federal document that says “SI” and a bill that says “artificial superintelligence” can now be about different things. Experts quoted by Poynter warn this could complicate regulation. In science and engineering, “SI” is also the International System of Units. [12][31]
“It sounds much better. It is much better, and it’s much more accurate.”The President, at the UN General Assembly, Sep 22, 2026, on the new name; he added that “artificial” makes it “sound fake.” [38]

House style

How Protocol STAMP writes it

For adopting “SI”

  • Federal documents will increasingly say SI; matching them keeps citations and searches aligned with primary sources.
  • Refusing it outright could look like taking a side.
  • If Congress writes it into law, the switch is already made.

Against

  • It reads as a capability claim (“super”) that an evaluation program exists to test, not to assume.
  • “SI” collides with SI units and with the research term ASI.
  • The legal definition is unchanged, so the new label adds no meaning.
  • The archive, every other government, every standard and every lab still say “AI.” A partial switch splits the record.
The rule, for now. We write “AI.” When we name or quote a US instrument that uses the new term, we quote it: ‘Super Intelligence’ (SI), with a note on first use that it is the US federal term for AI under EO 14434 and carries the same legal definition. We do not write a bare “SI” in our own voice. We will revisit the rule when the proposed federal definition is published; any change will be logged in Corrections + changes.
